Comments:
And so another edition of my favorite contest is in the books. We only have about 6.5 hours of daylight in southern OH/OH0 at this time of the year (SR ~07z, SS ~13:30z), so there's not much to look at through the windows when working CQWW CW and darkness-induced fatigue awaits around every corner. But fortunately the bands were quite hot!
Propagation towards Asia and the East in general was not so good from up here, but North America was very good, particularly on 80m-15m. On Sunday morning there was a nice grayline opening on 160m, way better than Saturday. Both 20m and 15m seemed to die quite early both days (especially on Sunday when the 18z hour was a disaster, it seemed also 40m was hopeless to anywhere from here), only to come back to life with solid NA openings later on. That phenomenon is pretty much the only hope we can sporadically cling to here in the propagation-poor North at >60N...! Saturday evening's opening around 21z resulted in my personal best CW QSO rate of 237/hour (dupes included).
I think both CQWW CW and SSB have shown that 10m is kissing us good-bye for a few years. The "regular" openings on 15m/20m also seem to be getting shorter and spottier. Some 10m DX openings were there but on CW it was not really runnable from up here. Fortunately I managed to collect a decent multiplier count in any case. The highlight was a spotty but lengthy opening to zones 3 and 4 around 20z-23z on Sunday evening. Heard N2IC there on Saturday evening when he replied to somebody, but couldn't catch him.
The weather here in the northeastern Åland Islands was stormy and rainy all weekend. I had trouble sleeping before the contest, as the wind makes loud whistling noises particularly due to the nearby yagis and our cottage is not exactly soundproof. So in desperation I tried sleeping with my Bose
noise-cancelling headphones on, which worked so-so at times and I got some 4-5 hours of rest :)
I worked for 48 hours straight, only getting up from the chair occasionally to stretch or to heed nature's call. I had some serious trouble staying awake on Sunday around 02z (our sunrise is at 07z), so I tried to stand up while making QSQs, slapped myself in the face to get some adrenaline running, drank an energy drink, etc., but it wasn't helping. Finally I went into the cold outside and splashed some water in my face, which seemed to help. Only got really tired one other time later on Sunday soon after sunrise. I think I held myself together pretty well, but my deteriorating CW copying and multitasking abilities were evident as Sunday progressed. Not quite sure how to simulate that for practice, other than just getting tired like this and practicing "on the job"...!
The station worked well, although I had some issue with Win-Test crashing a few times. It seems to be related to the Contest Recorder and the use of heavy MK2R+ switching due to SO2R. The audio level bars in the recorder freeze and CW messages can stop in mid-transmission. So I stopped recording (pressing the stop button also resulted in a crash...), re-started a couple of times and after that there was no problem. I've seen the same also in some mixed-mode contests earlier and thought it was related to the mutually different modes on the two radios, but it seems one-mode contests can cause failure too.
Thanks to the Brando Island Group and Radio Arcala teams for support, and thanks to all for the QSOs and multiplier moves! Some statistics below as usual.
