Comments:
I went into this contest thinking I'll sleep a bit more than the 30 minutes that I usually do in my serious CQWW efforts, but instead ended up working 48h for the first time...! I credit that to a successful rhythm change during the week, as I went to bed successively earlier each evening. Going to bed at 19:30 local on Friday for a 03:00 local start on Saturday thus provided some good pre-contest rest. I guess I was able to fall asleep nicely on Friday when I had no big plans and thus no big pressure :)
I only felt really tired a couple of times, the first time being before sunrise on Sunday and the second time being around 18z on Sunday evening. As I'm prone to extra heart beats when very tired, I took a beta blocker on Sunday for some "preventative doping," but otherwise managed to get through with just two energy drinks in the doping department. However, I did note that I became increasingly irritable as Sunday went along, which is not a good thing when already going crazy with non-stop SSB splatter everywhere around you! So that's a trait to work on.
The station worked well, including the recently repaired 3-el 40m yagi. The annoying 50-Hz hum in the SO2R monitor audio during transmission was finally completely gone after I installed ground loop isolators in the RX audio cables on Friday evening, and the audio was now a joy to listen to! Thanks to SM0W, SM5AJV, and OH6KN for the related tips. I only had some minor problems with the computer monitor intermittently shutting down and the computer keyboard not always responding while working 160m, and with the MK2R box briefly acting up on Sunday evening, saying that no keyer was installed (?). Perhaps a result of "RF".
Band conditions were nice on Saturday, although the waning of the solar cycle clearly showed on 10m through shorter openings. Anyway, it was a massive difference to the painful grind of the Scandinavian Activity Contest a couple of weeks ago :) Propagation forecasts predicted a glancing blow from a CME late Saturday, which would have resulted in an aurora-filled second half of the contest and killed the fun here in the north. Instead the particles were apparently somehow not compatible with the Earth's magnetosphere although the CME cloud arrived even earlier than expected, so no aurora materialized and the great contest show went on. Sunday's conditions were in my opinion mostly not as good as Saturday's, but the DX openings were there all the same.
The high point of the contest for me was probably a sustained 20m NA run on Saturday night, netting a lot of QSO points. The band first seemed to die down on Saturday evening, only to open up again and staying that way far into Sunday (UTC time). The low point probably came on Sunday evening when I simply was not able to find a proper spot on which to CQ on a completely packed 20m band, and the QSO rate dropped drastically. I loathe SSB frequency fights (and did I say I loathe constant SSB splatter? :) ) and had just spent hours on 15m defending my frequency from many stations who came a kHz or less away, so I tried to avoid knowingly becoming a party to the same misery for anybody else.
The most absurd point was probably on 15m Sunday when I asked a station to move after he came 400 Hz away from me, only to be told he had been there for the last 4 hours without any problems! I wondered if antenna directions really could have caused such a thing, but a quick check through DX cluster spots showed that he wasn't telling the truth at all... Constantly diverting transmit power to an EU antenna would be ideal, but right now we don't have a system in place for diverting only a fraction, and "losing" half of the legal limit power in a non-DX direction often feels too much.
One thing I wish the organizers would clarify is their adjudication approach towards QSOs at the band limits. Personally I'm flexible when it comes to crossing intra-band recommendations on CW/SSB/digital mode areas. They are just recommendations and plans, so when thousands of contesters as a majority temporarily need more "real estate" inside the bands I feel it's OK where national regulations allow it. However, actual regulatory band limits are a different matter altogether. So what is one to do when a juicy double mult is managing his pileup on 14349.9 kHz USB (or 21449.9 for that matter)? I didn't work him as I didn't want to end up on any black lists (such as the European 7200+ kHz list from last year), thus disadvantaging myself. How should this problem best be approached?
I'm very happy to unexpectedly lay claim on the European SOAB HP Assisted record, unless somebody else scored even higher :) A big thanks and congratulations to Tõnno ES5TV, with whom I raced on cqcontest.net. Although I was assisted and he wasn't, I was no longer able to keep up with his score after Sunday morning. He sustained his QSO rates admirably, really showing what his station's firepower can do when manned by a top-notch operator!
Thanks to the Brändö Island Group and Radio Arcala teams for all support, and to everyone for the QSOs! Some statistics can be found below.
