TS940 serial numbers?

I am looking for a used mid-to-late production model ts940sat.
Apparently, the first digit of the serial number DOES NOT correspond to
the year of manufacture.  A 940 with a 7mil serial number that I found
was actually built in 1985.

I think that 940's were built from mid 1984 thru 1990.

Can someone tell me what the "good" 940 serial numbers are?

Does anyone know the relationship between serial number and year of
manufacture?

Anyone heard of any rumors concerning new Kenwood hf rigs?
