You are considered multi-op if you use the cluster. I was anxious to
get a sweep last year, so I used cluster help. This made me "multi-
op", even though I was the only one who touched any of my radios. The
score contributes to a club total just the same. I shut my cluster
station off this year, so that I would be single-op. But no sweep,
darn!

Several of the new hams from a license course I helped teach this spring
entered the phone Sweepstakes last weekend. All were very excited about
working all of the states that were on ten meters. They are collecting
QSL cards for the ARRL Worked All States Award.
It is my understanding that the exchange of signal reports is what makes
a valid QSO for most awards. A signal report is not part of the SS
exchange. So, can QSL cards from SS contacts be used for awards like
WAS? If so, what goes in the REPORT or RST section of the cards? Does
this apply to Field Day as well?
If the contacts do not count for Worked All States, perhaps we need
to stuff an RS(T) into the already lengthy SS exchange!

Many years ago when I was into state collecting, you could just put
"Sweepstakes" down for the exchange on your QSLs and WAS application
and it was fine. I can't imagine this has changed. Although even
now when I get a QSL for an SS contact, I put the connonical 59 or
599 in the RS(T) box on the return card. In fact, does the WAS
program even require QSLs any more?

I am fiddling with the CW keying circuit from the CT user's manual,
developed by K3KU. It is a clever circuit using 2 resistors,
a PNP and NPN transistors and a 9V battery for keying any + or -
voltage lines.
My problem is with the hookup instructions. The base of the NPN
transistor goes to a resistor and the DTR line (DB25 pin 20). The
emitter goes to ground if you are using a serial port but the SLCT
line (DB25 pin 17) of LPT1. Wired this way, the circuit doesn't work
because both the SLCT and DTR lines go high when CT keys the port.
Grounding the emitter via a 1Kohm resistor makes it work, as would
disconnecting the SLCT connection and grounding the emitter.
Why does this circuit suggest using the SLCT line? What am I, or my
SLCT line, doing wrong? Should I just ground the emitter of the
NPN transistor?

I must admit that I have found a new sense of respect for those
who work SS as single op/low power and get the Clean Sweep. Now
I understand why many DX'ers consider the PacketCluster as having
devalued the achievement of getting DXCC (although I don't know
what I'd do without it!).
It's amazing how tiring an S&P operation can be just scanning for
hours looking for those last two or three Sections. In my
experience during the last three years of operating single op/low
power SS, I have concluded that a) you can go for score, or b)
you can go for the Clean Sweep - but not both.
For those of you who operated SO/low power and made the Clean
Sweep, my heartiest congratulations. You did it the "old
fashioned way....you EARNED it"!
Time on: 20.6 hours Score: 433 Q's X 77 = 66,682
