I will be attending the Visalia Convention for the first time. Unfortunately
I will have to miss Dayton this year because of prior commitments in KH6
land. ( How's that for a GOOD reason to miss the annual migration). It looks
like I may have a little extra time the day before or after the convention.
( Connections to VE4 land really suck).

Question: Is there anything to do near or in Visalia? No I'm not much of a
golfer, its hard to practice when you keep losing those little white balls
in 3 foot snowdrifts. Any MEGA-stations nearby that would tolerate a visit ?
Are there any pre/post convention activities/debauchery that you think a
resident of 49 degrees North latitude would enjoy ? At this time of year the
best we can come up with is the tower licking contest. Excuse me while I go
retrieve my tongue.

Please reply direct to me. Thanx

It's a perfect category for a 2-op DXpedition. Three 8-hour shifts per op
goes down pretty easy. That's my idea of a 24-hour category ;-)

Pacific DX activity on this side seemed low this year. Here are the four
best and worst hours from our AG6D M/2 operation:

d-hr 160 80 40 20 15 10 hr-tot
1-01 . . 15/6 15/3 66/9 . 96/18 5p pst
1-10 . 7/2 70/7 . . . 77/9 2a pst
1-00 . . . 33/8 43/6 . 76/14 4p pst
1-13 . 41/1 30/1 4/4 . . 75/6 5a pst
          . . . . . .
2-07 . 4/3 3/1 4/0 . . 11/4 11p pst
2-18 . . . 1/1 6/1 4/2 11/4 10a pst
2-21 . . . 3/2 8/0 . 11/2 1p pst
2-19 . . . . 4/0 3/1 7/1 11a pst

Sunday's 11am hour was no fun. The bands seemed open, but we had already
worked everything we heard. Small wonder why there are so few multi-ops in
the DX-Test here in the west. IMHO, what'd help more than regional boxes is
more activity. Activity breeds activity. So, how to make it more fun for
the DX side and keep the W/VE-QSO-Party flavor?

1. Allow Canadian and US overseas posessions count as multipliers for
both W/VE and DX stations. (They become a new third category.)

2. Allow DXpeditions to contribute their scores to their home ARRL clubs.

The idea is to stir up more DXpeditions. KH and KP might get very popular.
They might draw out other DX who stick around to work a few states.
Besides, KP2 is great in February and March; in October it's too hot.

3. Stir up W/VE activity in the JA DX Test.

We want them to work us, so . . .

> Relax. Enjoy the variety.

Subject: How Prevent Ice on Yagis?
Message-ID: <30940227033103/0006358668PK3EM at mcimail.com>

Last winter, and again this winter, my yagi (no longer plural...) has
collected a LOT of ice -- up to an inch radial. The ice completely detunes
the antennas; for ARRL SSB last year the JA's were louder off the back, and
from the few answers I got my KW was more like QRP. Does anyone have
strategies for preventing the ice accumulations, or at least minimize them?
Also, are some yagi designs more susceptible to detuning by ice than others?
This may sound strange, but after 22 years contesting from this geographic
area, I never had a problem with ice detuning until the 1993 ARRL SSB.
Reply directly, I will summarize what learn if response warrants. Thanks.

Lack of activity? Sunday blues? worked out the band? One sure cure is
a NEW CALLSIGN at 0000Z the second day! a Win-Win? lessee..
1. 48 stations will have a new pool of calls to work, US stns and DX 48
hr guys will have more ACTION (FUN).
2. 24 guy can do just first 24, AND non-radio things, all in one weekend;
...OR he can start all over and do it again in the second 24, as FRESH
MEAT...resulting in more ACTION (FUN).
3. Where can I find a NEW call? 2nd op, wife, club call, etc. Its done all
the time.
4. BOTTOM LINE: Do we do this for fun? (ACTION=RATE=FUN) IF SO< L
LETS MAKE THE EVENT FIT THE PLAYERS NEEDS ! Or do we try to do the best we can
with existing rule? .... good philosophical question...and it should be
answered first..before we try and tinker. (as for me FUN FACTOR is #1) 73 K7SS

Why do you quote the CQ WW rule? It is the CQ WW rule, not for ARRL.

>M/S.

Why don't you enter the Multi-Two. This class is for you.

CQWW's Multi-Single is not exactly Single Transmitter class. If you have
enogh antennas, transmitters & ops, you should go in 2-TX class. ARRL's
M/S is the real single transmitter class and I can enjoy that class with
single op set-up with my friend.

I do not want to change that M/S, M/2 & Unlimited Mop category in ARRL DX.

b) a place to toss a sleeping bag or split a room cost.

The CQ multi-single rule is not "single transmitter" at all. It promotes
using two transmitters (or more).

How about changing the ARRL 10 minute rule to a 5 minute rule? This
would still be long enough to limit multi-transmitter operation yet
introduce some more flexibility to change bands. I am sure guys will
rubber clock around part of the 5 mins, but this is still a long enough
time period to keep them within the INTENT of the rule.

Think about it. With a straight 10 minute rule, the max number of band
changes in an hour is only 6. With a 5 minute rule, it is 12. As a
single op with 2 rigs, I am capable of 15 or 20 in a busy hour. This
should help even things up.

This topic has been before the CAC for years without resolution. Good
luck this time!

Hi gang,

This has been an interesting week. It began with a real high - a great
weekend in the ARRL CW. Everything was working perfectly. I was just
turning my mental energy to getting ready for ARRL Phone when we had a
slight ice storm. Woke up to the 40 meter beam elements in different
polarizations.

No problem. Will climb tower and fix them (I've been through this
before). Get out to the tower and find an element laying on the ground.
What's this?! Half the driven element of my 5-ele 20! If it had been
any other element would not have been so deadly...

Climb tower to work on the 40. Find that half of my 80m inverted vee
couldn't take the ice and had fallen off. See the beam kind of free
wheeling in the wind (more than it should). On further review, discover
that the bolts which hold the rotator to the tower are slowly stripping
out (I hope it lasts until the wind chill is in positive numbers).

Finally get up to the 40. See 1/2" ice still on some elements (this is
48 hours AFTER the storm). Do manage to get the elements back in the
right plane but notice other damage that will require taking it down and
rebuilding it this summer.

Come down and tell wife that I now have more time available for her than
I had thought. She's happier...

One of you guys can have my frequency for CQing this weekend.

Randy, K5ZD

I have become the owner of a used Kenwood TR-9000
It works well in the FM mode, the CW mode, it keys the transmit light in
the usb,lsb mode but no power out, it dose receive in the ssb modes.
I think it's as simple as a switching transistor in the mike or ssb path
but I have no books to check it out. Any info-advice would be appreciated

Bruce,

I think what you are talking about is an AGC circuit with a threshold which
is set well above the background noise level. This lets signals show some
amplitude variation before causing the AGC to act. On most modern rigs, if
the AGC is on and the RF gain control is turned up to max, the background
noise has the same apparent loudness (within a couple dB) as a signal of
any strength. What I usually do is run the RF gain low enough that the
background noise isn't operating the AGC (but I can still hear it in
there). This gives me the effect of not running AGC for most signals. But
is a rock crusher suddenly appears, the AGC will save my ears.
