I think you missed the point here. Running 3000 watts is ILLEGAL! Monitoring
a packet is NOT. Packet operation is a v-e-r-y modern technology. We need to
accept its arrival on the scene as any other modern weapon. After all, radio
contesting is not much different from warring. But it's safer, and a heck of
a lot more fun! During the off season (for me, anyway) I try to fine tune my
"weapons" and acquire some new ones. When I arrive at the battle, I'll be as
ready as I can be. My blood rushes, and I even get a little anxious -
something like a little kid going to the amusement park - because I can't
wait to get into the fray. I can't help it - I love contesting. It's just
GREAT FUN. But, as someone who does a fair amount of single-opping, I can
tell you that I don't like to leave my weapons at the gate just because a few
self-appointed altruists don't feel like loading their new guns.

And, just for the record, I'm not ignoring the issues. I DO undersand the
correlation between on-site human assistance and real-time packet spotting.
But the live human element (multi-operating) offers so much more in many
different ways to a contest effort than packet ever could. And I'm convinced
that my ct/486DX2/40 combo is faster at duping than any two on-site buddies
could ever be. I'll come alone, without the gang, but I'll bring my stuff and
I'll be ready. And that's the way I see it.
