Hello all,
I will be going to the Caribbean for CQWW SSB and I want to make a side trip
after the contest to VI for SS CW. The tentative plans that I made with one
of the Island hams fell through last week, so I have to start over from
scratch and I need a little help!
Does anybody know someone on KP2 who wouldn't mind having a guest op for that
weekend? I fully expect to pay my own way just like I would at a hotel.
Time is running short, so I'd like to get something confirmed ASAP. Any
info that anyone could provide, phone #, Email address, or postal address
would be most appreciated!

Looks like we should have all 58 California Counties on
the air this weekend for the 1994 California QSO Party. This
contest is well-supported by software: CT, NA, TR-LOG, WriteLog for
Windows by W5XD, and freeware by AE6Y (DOS and Windows versions)
and AD6E. Activity should be very high this year since anyone who
makes 100 QSOs is eligible to receive a popular CQP T-shirt. Top

I modelled my situation last night with AO. I used it above ground (I
havn't tried free space yet). I noticed 1DB+ degredation in gain and 10db
in F/B with the 20M 205CA stacked 6 feet above a 10M KLM 6 element. I only
looked at the 10M yagi in terms of change in pattern/gain (Not the 205 yet).
I then moved the 20M antenna further and further away. I STILL had
interaction with the 20M yagi at 50 feet above the 10M yagi! Now I'm no
antenna expert, but this suggests to me that the program ain't work'n or the
operator is putting in bad data.
I called K8CC and asked for his input. He also felt (but was going to
duplicate my findings in NEC) that the program was not giving accurate
results. Both K4VX and K8CC felt that a 10m yagi stacked 6 feet below 20m
yagi will not be affected by the 20m yagi. Other proof of this is in the
suggestions of Hygain that a 15M antenna needs to be about (I think) 6 feet
away from a 10m yagi. Hygain has an antenna range! I tend to believe these
folks!
OK you antenna modelling experts... What say?

My experience is that the forward gain is great, but the front to back ratio
and overall cleanness of the pattern are not so hot. I can't imagine a
properly functioning XA getting "waxed" in the forward gain department by
any 5 el monobander at similar height. Maybe a db or two. It's impossible to
make a single on the air comparison and draw a valid inference of how well
the antenna is working. I usually do 10 comparisons, throw out the two
outlying values on both ends, and average the remaining six. Even more is
better. Granted, it's hard to do that on 15 nowadays.
Maybe there is something near the XA that is detuning it: guy wires, wire
antennas, or another yagi? Maybe there's a bad connection in the XA
somewhere. The antenna is really a pain to assemble. A good final check on
all of the connections in the trap assemblies is to measure the DC
resistance between the outer shells of the 10 and 15 meter trap capacitors.
The resistance should be on the order of 0.5 ohm. This checks the integrity
of ALL the trap connections.
My XA at 48 feet holds the record for WPXCW on 15m (since 1981), and has won
ARRL DXCW twice on 15m, so I think the antenna really delivers in the
forward gain department. As for the front to back ratio, it's kinda neat to
be able to work JA's and the Caribbean at the same time, without rotating
the antenna.

Bill... I'm certainly no antenna modeling expert. But, I had a similiar
question some months ago regarding stacking a 20M yagi above a 15M yagi.
In a phone conversation with the FORCE12 antenna guru, he indicated that
an "inverted stack" (lower freq yagi above higher freq yagi) was not
advisable due to what he termed something like "electrostatic shielding/
shading". Perhaps due the lower freq yagi longer boom and elements??

For those of us "less-than-manic" contesters in events like CQWW and ARRL DX...
Are we allowed to file our entry for, let's say 80 meters (if that's where
we want to concentrate), but still work the higher bands during the daytime
for fun and to hand out more Q's?
What I'm getting at is, would we send the higher band logs as a check log?
Or would we just send in a log for 80 meters and nothing else? If we sent
in nothing else, would the log checkers penalize the other stations because
they couldn't verify the high band Q's since they're "not in our log"?
