Well I must admit I'm "IBM challenged" cause I can never remember all
those ct kbd combos when I'm guest oping :)
But at home I'm quite comfortable with my mac and N0IOS' Marathon
contest pgm; Its mac interface is a breeze (yes I'm spoiled by macs,
and use pcs when I must).
I've used Marathon in most of the major contests this past winter
operating ssb, cw & rtty, and had a great time; The rig intfc and tnc
interface worked superb, esp since the new version has icom rig
support. It also runs under system 7.5, and does just fine on my old
b&w pb170; N0IOS is responsive to requests, and while its not CT
(Marathon isnt for multi-ops and doesnt have all those lovely bells
and whistles like the needed spots and scrolling spots window), it
suited my purposes as a single op;
There are some other pgms out on the web (some are listed in
ftp://oak.oakland.edu/pub/hamradio/arrl/infoserver/techmisc/softmac.txt)
but I've not found any to be as complete as Marathon.

Well, the contesting gods did not smile on W3GOI for this
contest. Because my youngest of three children is 20, I
had to hunt up a "hired gun" for this contest. I was
successful in the form of a friend's 9-year old, David.
We even had a brief "training" session a few days before
the contest, so that david and his Dad could see what we
were going to be doing. David was excited. But, alas,
I forgot to make contingencies for a change in Little
League schedule, and David's first love is baseball...
and what would _you_ rather do on a fine spring day if
you were a 9-year old boy?
Maybe we'll make the next SquINT contest; let's have
another soon!!

Never having owned or installed one, that was my fear also, along with
doing a bang up job of cutting the braid. I guess if I was going to
install one I would run a bead of RTV around the coax jacket and then
clamp the block on. Why is the block better than a bulkhead connector
mounted on an angle with a PL-259 on each side?

I tried and tried to get #1 daughter (7) interested in SquINT'ing, to no
avail. She's pretty big time until she realizes she's gonna have to talk
to someone she doesn't know <shudder>. Oh well, I'll try again next
time. Maybe by then, #2 daughter (4) will want to give it a try. Then
I'll have a REAL fight on my hands !!

I don't know about the ICE grounding blocks. Sounds $$$ !
I use regular, small, stainless steel hoseclamps. I CAREFULLY cut the
jacket (slightly wider then the width of the hoseclamp), goop the
connection with the copper equivalent of Penatrox ( don't know what its
called - its the stuff PolyPhasor includes with its ground kits) for
RG-type cables -OR- regular old Penatrox for Aluminium CATV cable, put
the hoseclamp on with a piece of RG-213 braid stuck underneath (coming
DOWN out of the clamp - you know, toward the ground...), tighten
CAREFULLY (it need not be more then "snug" with the grease in there) and
tape like you would waterproof a connector. Clamp the other end of the
braid to the tower leg (at the VEERRRRRY bottom, you know) and ...
VOILA ! Eat Grounded Death, Lightning !!
A) Why does the ground braid "point down" ?
So no water will flow underneath where the braid comes out, 'natch.
B) Why be careful when tightening hoseclamps ?
So you don't crunch the coax, of course. Not as important with hardline.
C) Of Course...this doesn't do squat for the energy INSIDE, on the center
conductor if your antenna feed point isn't at DC ground (even if it IS).
Thats why we ALL use gas-discharge arrestors BEFORE our feedlines come
inside our expensive houses, right ??

Greetings Fellow Contesters,
Having now heard directly from N0OIS and then reading the message below, I
must say:
My post using the term "IBM challenged" was just "toung-in-cheek." (That
is, I was trying to add a bit of humor -- I even put it in quotes, to set
it apart from the rest of my message.) As for myself, I respect the
Macintosh line, the Apple Computer Company, and the people who use their
products. I deeply regret and sincerely apologize for the use of that
terminology, it has served to cloud an otherwise good intentioned offer to
those seeking Mac Amateur Radio related software. ARRL EAD would be MOST
happy to add "Marathon" to the EAD listing of "known" Mac software, if N0OIS
will supply some product and ordering information (mail address and phone
number / internet address).

Subject: CATV Hardline Question

Reading this stuff about wet coax leads me to a couple of questions...
I have a ton of 75 ohm CATV hardline I am using at the new place. Some of
the 1/2" stuff doesn't have the jacket on it and in the process of bending
it through the tower and other things - dimples have developed in places.
Should I be concerned? I'm guessing at HF it won't matter... the 1/2"
stuff is only being used on 15m (close tower) and below 21Mhz.
Much of this hardline has been stored (dumped) outside. No caps on the
ends. Will this stuff suck water like coax? It appears FB, but I didn't
try to suck water out of it like a straw (Gotta draw the line somewhere).
Should I worry about water in it?
I'll summarize if it's worthwhile.

Again three cheers for QSTs regional standing boxes!!
I came out of a 10 year retirement from SS to help the NCCC (yeah, like they
needed any help!) only to miss winning the Pacific Div (low pwr, SSB) by the
equivalent of a half of a QSO to N6NF (and we were both in SCV so no section
award either - ouch). Seeing my call in the regional boxes greatly relieved
the pain. The top ten listings are important, but the scores are often
dominated by only a few regions. I find the regional boxes to be more
interesting to read. I am glad to see they kept this improvement in the
reporting.
I'll see you all again in SS in 2004. N6NF watch out. ;-)

TO THE GROUP:
The snow has finally melted here and my mind is turning
to antennas, specifically to my coax. I'm going to put
in 1/2 inch 50 ohm hardline and I need advice in general.
To those of you already using hardline, what would you
have done differently? Should I buy the expensive connectors
or make my own out of PL-259's as it shows in the Antenna
Handbook. Should I use N-connectors insteaI have two
runs of 150 feet to my towers. By the way, I looked around
for the 75 ohm CATV coax with no luck.
