On this thread....
A contest free zone may appeal to us...BUT... If I am not a contester and you
are telling me that on any given weekend I HAVE to move my daily
net/sstv/ragchew in order to lessen interference for your contest, guess what
I am going to tell you... (picture a universal gesture here)
I understand the rational behind the idea of a contest free zone, but I also
understand human nature, and the 87% of hams who do not contest will assume
that WE ought to stay away from them, not the other way around.... I strongly
urge that the idea of further sub bands be dropped... Moving the discussion
of this topic into the national magazine forums, or into the ARRL's policy
groups, or into the purview of the FCC subcommittees is more likely to result
in significant restrictions on contesting, than it is too generate wide
support for moving 87% of hams off THEIR frequency...

FWIW, there were two good articles on lightning protection in QST magazine -
 October and December 1994.
   
In Minnesota, my 90 ft tower was stuck by lightning almost every time a cloud
 passed overhead.  I estimate I was hit 4-5 times each summer.  My neighbors
 were glad to have such a big lightning rod protecting their property.  
  
I never lost any equipment and don't think the cement exploded but it could have
 been damaged without my knowledge.   Anyway, the tower had one copper pipe
 ground rod next to the cement base.  I had good ground conductivity (unlike my
 present location - but my current QTH never has lightning!).  I also switched
 all coaxes to ground and would usually disconnect the main breakers coming into
 the shack.

Despite having submitted entries in both modes of the 1994 All
Asian contests, I have yet to receive any results (usually mailed
directly) from the sponsors. Have the final results been published
somewhere that I might have missed? I think we broke a record ...
maybe two ... and would love to see something official.
