The two radio thing is great...I can listen to the ball game in one ear while
waiting for the bands to open! Seriously wimpy conditions...not really
disturbed, just wimpy, like week-old celery. Sure missed the JA
contingent and only heard one African (9X1A) all weekend. No sunspots for
several days prior to contest time makes for a dull contest! I did get
the garage cleaned out Sunday morning, though...

Wow ! Not bad conditions for the bottom of the sunspot cycle.
I was surprised by the conditions on 80M- especially with
stormy condx all wkend.
The WPX CW has to be one of my favorites, just wish it was held in April.

Comments:
Day 1 really had me worried - if the good day was that bad, what was in
store for day 2? Turned out to be not so bad, relatively speaking. Never
saw 10 so dead - managed to squeak in an EA8, though. 15 acted like 10
did last year. If next year's solar flux is below 70 again, I just might
go to the beach. 80 was a big disappointment with all the noise -- 40
wasn't so great either. Didn't run into a single pileup all weekend -
very strange.
The new quad loop on 20 played very well. (single element, fixed toward
30 degrees). It was my spring project and this was the first real test.
This year I didn't suffer the 20 meter early morning doldrums that I
had with my old antenna - characterized by Europe banging in but not
being able to work them (also known as cloud warming).
Best QSO: An HC2 who called CQ WPX then gave me his name and QTH but no
number. So I gave him my name and QTH and asked for his number,
expecting to get #1 ... he gave me #115 !!

Hello Contest Gang:
Here is a little story that I thought was pretty interesting. Actually
relates to FD, new blood, and emergency operations...
I bought a Heathkit HW-9 in Jan 95, put together a G5RV antenna, got
some 12v batteries...went to the local Forest Perserve last weekend
(May 20 or 21) and operated from about 10am until 12 noon.
The funniest part of the whole thing was the Forest Perserve cop coming
by and asking what I was doing? (My wife had prep me with emergency
comm stuff, etc). He wanted to know what the THING in the trees was.
(HI) Never mind the radio junk on the folding table, I guess.
=> He said "In thirty years, I've never seen anything like this."
Good thing I was able to make analogies to his HT on his belt...
Has he had a sheltered life or what? hihi He doesn't know what CONTEST
fun he's missing!

6-el 15m monoband yagi at 65 feet
I only thought last year's score was low. This year I managed to do only a
little better than half of last year's. At least the good news was the
second day conditions were better than the first. However, very little
propagation from S.Calif to anything considered to be DX. Spent most of
the contest copying signals that didn't even move the S-meter. I suppose
the good news was I had lots of time to do antenna modeling on the
logging computer.
Highlights:
Worked S92SS on Sunday when I wasn't even hearing Caribbean stations.
JAs broke through with two hours remaining in the contest.
Perseverance award to VS6BG who after managing to copy my callsign, stuck
it out to get the serial number (only took about 20 tries). Since he was
S0 for me, I can only imagine how dirt weak my signal must have been
for him.
