I agree!!! As someone said recently, I'm in favor of anything that'll
make it more fun. Being able to slither around the bands, breaking pileups
and working mults unimpeded by a ten minute would be great! And more fun.

Why do we have any limit to band changing? Band changing is just as much a
part of contest strategy as
deciding when to "run" and when to "S & P". I say we should set no limit on
band changes, but limit all but MM entrants to one transmitted signal at any
given time. Octopus switches should be acceptable.
KISS is always the best principle for any set of rules.

Even casual contesters are not learning impaired. They'll catch on very
quickly. Forget the confusion argument.

If you're willing to do a bit of hardware work, this scheme works great:
Buy one of Radio Shack's electret mike elements, part #270-090. ($1.79)
Solder about 6" of stiff wire to the grounded pin. Also solder the shield
of a length of shielded wire or thin coax (RG-174) to the grounded pin, and
the center conductor to the "hot" pin. Pass a length of heat-shrink tubing
over both wires.
Solder the other end of the stiff wire to a medium-sized alligator clip.
Connect the shield of the other end of the shielded wire to the ground pin
on your mike plug. (pin 7 for a Kenwood) Connect the hot lead to both a
10K resistor, and a 0.1uF capacitor. Connect the other end of the resistor
to a source of about 9 volts. (pin 5 for a Kenwood) And connect the other
end of the capacitor to the mike input pin, pin 1 for a Kenwood.
The alligator clip can be clipped to the frame of any set of headphones; I
use RS's PRO-60s. Or, if you wear glasses, it can be clipped to the frames.
Bend the stiff wire to hold the mike element in the desired location. It
isn't a Heil, but it works pretty darn well for me.
Incidentially, I don't claim originality; this design was culled from a QST
hint a few years back.

The NJ QSO Party is this weekend.
The full details appear in the August 1996 issues
of QST or CQ magazines. For those that don't get
either, here is information regarding the 1996 New
Jersey QSO Party:
2000z Saturday August 17 to 0700z Sunday August 18
and 1300z Sunday August 18 to 0200z Monday August
19.
Exchange QSO number, RS(T) and QTH (County for NJ,
state/province/country for others).
Scoring: 3 points per contact. Multiply total
QSO points by multiplier points for final score.
(Each state/province/country worked counts as a
multiplier for NJ stations and NJ counties are the
multipliers for non-NJ stations.)
CW and phone are part of the same contests.
Stations can be worked on each band and mode. NJ
stations may contact in-state stations for QSO and
multiplier credit. Non-NJ stations multiply total
NJ QSOs by the number of NJ counties worked
(maximum of 21).
Recommended frequencies: 1.810, 3.535, 3.950,
7.035, 7.135, 7.235, 14.035, 14.285, 21.100,
21.355, 28.100, 28.400, 50-50.5, and 144-146 MHz.
Suggestions: phone on even hours, 15/10 meters on
odd hours, 160 meters at 0500z.
There are certificates for the top scorers in each
NJ county, ARRL Section, and DX Country,
Second-place awards are issued if four or more
logs are received from that section.
Novice/Technician and mobile awards are available.
Four plaques, donated by the NNJ and SNJ SMs are
issued to the winning stations in NNJ and SNJ.
Log in UTC and indicate multipliers the first time
it is worked. Include a dupe sheet and summary
page when submitting logs. Logs go to the
Englewood Amateur Radio Association, PO Box 528,
Englewood, NJ 07631-0528 and must be received by
them no later than September 14, 1996. Include a
large SASE if you wish a copy of the results.
