Tnx for pointing this out!
What happened is that the daily update of the FCC database for July 2, 1996
never
appeared on the FCC's ftp server. I build my info off these daily updates
because the
data is manageable in size. Currently, there is no easy way for me to fix
the problem.
In order to fix it, I believe that I would have to process the entire
application
database (32 MB in size) and look for vanity calls that are not in my data.
Maybe I will
take on this task some time. For now, I'm putting your vanity call out
there for July 2
along with a note stating that the July 2 data is incomplete. If there are
others reading
this e-mail that received vanity calls issued on July 2, please send me the
info, and I will
put you out there.
I'm also in the process of changing somewhat the format of the vanity call
data on my Web
page. I'll post info on the changes to this reflector when the changes are
complete.

Split Frequency Operation
With different frequencies authorized internationally, it is often necessary
to operate split frequency, especially on SSB in the lower bands. What
tricks do you use when operating split frequency? What do you do to prevent
transmitting on the wrong VFO? How do you pick a listening frequency? What
do you do when someone else on the band inadvertently picks the same
listening frequency or a DX station decides that your listening frequency is
quiet and starts callying CQ? How often do you check your own CQ frequency
for callers or QRM?

Subject: Anyone use the FT890 as a "backup" contest radio?

We're trying to complete the "backup" suite (antennas and power are taken
care of, just need a backup radio) at Windwood and are considering the
FT890. It's a modern, reliable radio available used at a reasonable price.
Anyone out there got one? Impressions?
Other candidates, want to keep this under $1000?
If I could honestly convince myself that a used 930 would always work when
needed I would go that route but, given the well known problems and
Windwood's location far from easy repair (of even my ability to get down
more than a couple of times a year), I must value reliability over all other
considerations.
BTW, for those who asked, Windwood did take a hit from Bertha. The house is
fine but the tower folded and the antenna is now "on the roof". Windwood
has backup antennas (an A3, mast, dipoles) which will be used for the WAE
CW. I'll be going down to rebuild the second week in September. Windwood
should be fully operational again in time for the WAE SSB unless, of course,
another hurricane gets there first.
Ah, the joys, challenges and opportunities of maintaining a Caribbean
contest station!

I've changed the format of the Vanity Call info on my Web page.
The daily data is still there, but I've taken the complete data
and PKZIPed to cut down on its size. I've also resorted the
complete data in Callbook order and put it in separate files
for each call area. Hopefully this new data format will be
more useful to everyone.

Hurricanes cause phone, power, and other utilities to be cut off. Families
all over the country and world worry about their loved ones. The nets are
not for our information on where the storm is, but to handle health and
welfare traffic out of the disaster area. 20M is the best band to get out
all over the world for this traffic passing at this point in the cycle.
Thus, the nets on 20M.

Larry, Not a good CW radio. At higher keying speeds, the characters become
truncated, especially during full QSK mode.

Real amateur radio operators would not have to give question to
avoiding these net frequencies. Top contesters are usually
experienced enough to KNOW themselves the uses and need of amateur
radio in an emergency. It's not a real "brainer" to know why and

The FCC Vanity Callsign announcement promolgated by ARRL to announce
opening of Gate 1A (July 22) contained this cryptic sentence:
"A future public notice will announce Gate 2, which will have
expanded eligibility standards affecting Amateur Extra class licensees."
Does this mean Gate 2 standards have been modified from what was
originally published in the notices of proposed rulemaking, or does it
merely mean "expanded eligibility standards" relative to Gates 1 and 1A?
Anyone know for sure?

Hello Dave, the 4U1UN net only activates during a real international
emergency that we may be of some assistance with and then only on 14.268
(and not the rest of the band!). Otherwise, we never meet there and have
no "freq. gardians" on duty at any time. I only avoid 14.300 because that
is the boat info net and may actually save a life at any time , and the
14.336 mobile net because I feel bad when I qrm those weak sigs.
The 4U1UN net is closed for Bertha now that the U. S. hams are taking care

WRTC 96 is only hours away! You can hear the ops warming up their stations
now. At 1145z they learn what 1x1 call they will use, and at 1200z the 52
teams from 30 countries will hit the bands in full force, competing for the
right to step forward at the HRO Awards banquet as World Champions.
Work the WRTC 96 stations, 1x1 calls from W6A-W6Z and K6A-K6Z on 40 through
10 meters, CW and SSB, for 1200z Saturday, July 13 to 0600z July 14. A grand
packet intertie connects most of the contesting world for the weekend, so
post those spots (calls only, please). We'll QSL 100% via bureau, but be
sure the WRTC station has your call right.
The top 300 stations who make the most QSOs with WRTC teams win
commemorative WRTC tee shirts. Work all 52 different 1x1 callsigns to win a
special commemorative deck of WRTC 96 playing cards. Win a WRTC 96 letter
opener endorsed for making 10, 25, 50, 75, or 100 QSOs on any combination of
bands and modes.
To encourage multioperator stations in the IARU contest to work the WRTC 96
stations, the operators of multiop stations are all eligible individually for
any of these awards earned by the station in WRTC 96. Each operator should
apply for desired awards.
Two exhibition teams from Latvia and the People's Republic of China will
operate in WRTC 96 signing AH3C and AH3D. These stations are "wildcards"
that count in place of 1x1's toward the sweep award.
WRTC 96 will publish the list of stations qualifying for awards. If you
make the list and want to receive your award(s), send a self-addressed
adhesive mailing label before December 31, 1996 with your name, callsign, and

Dear IARU Participants:
Your log is wanted! Please help us verify our WRTC competitors' logs by
sending us *your* IARU log via e-mail!
Our judges only have about 18 hours after the teams are finished to perform
the log checking process. It would be wonderful to get some logs sent to us
right after our WRTC competitors finish at 0600Z on Sunday. That's six
hours before the regular IARU finish. Even a partial log from you will help
us some.
Send any log in plain-text format, or send CT logs in .BIN format, NA logs
in .QDF format, or TR logs in .DAT format. If you use a binary format, be
sure to encode the data.
