Hi, Sam --

      Glad you enjoy these discussions.  Your use of wooden utility poles is
a new one on me.  Sounds pretty stout!  The crux is getting them installed.
 It's great if your buddy works for the utility but gettting a special
auger/setting truck in might blow your budget.  If you get a permit, can you
get a PE to sign off on them?

     The only prime directive for towers is "do what the manufacturer says".
 If the surplus wire meets the strength specification, feel free to use it.
 Rohn specs 3/16" for most 25G and 45G and I don't think utilities use
anything that SMALL - hi!
