RE Rohn 25G

Concerning the recent thread on 25G's total inadequacy as tower material...
this one is 150' and is supporting a 4el M2 40 meter on an M2 Orion 2800P, a
KT34XA on a ring rotor, another tribander, and various 160/80 stuff draped
all over it... it is guyed with 4000# phillystran to Rohn guy brackets (not
just wrapped around the leg).... included below is part of a non reflector
email to a friend...

Well, we had a major windstorm here last night... Harry Brown airport had an
official 75 knots last night (87mph)...it bent their rotating beacon tower...
My satellite antennas behind the office blew over and the 2 meter crossed
yagi is now spare parts... the pickup truck cap which was sitting on saw
horses levitated into the wild blue yonder... I haven't surveyed that damage
yet..
The big tower appears fine...I see that the tip of dir #4 on the kt34xa is up
over one of the phillystran guys... I don't think that is a problem...  the
beam does not appear bent... It looks like I can just rotate the other way
and have it pop loose... but, the wind still gusting to 45 , so I will leave
it until it calms down...  right at dusk I was watching the beams for a
while, and they were taking a beating... the wind was chopping and shifting,
varying 30 to 40 degrees from gust to gust... just shaking the beams like a
dog shaking a rope...  the kt34xa on the ring rotor would actually rear up,
with the end of the beam rising several feet vertically as the ring took up
the slack in its wheels.......the phillystran was singing when touched ...
anyway, I know that the tower/philly is good to somewhere near 87 mph...

A couple of comments on DXpedition scores counting for club
competition:
 
1)  The discussion about the local club issue misses a bigger
unleveling factor:  how serious domestic multi op efforts skew
the results, particularly in the DX contests.   I don't have
results in front of me, but I think that the top DX contest
multi-multis beat, or at least come quite close to, the top local
club aggregates.
 
Anyone who would get excited about the effects of DXpeditions
should consider what would happen if K3LR ever decided to submit
his scores for the Mercer County ARC.  All Tim would need to do
is to be sure to have enough locals drop by to make a token QSO
to satisfy the 66% rule, and the local class would be sewn up.
 
A more sensible way to categorize the local (and medium) club
size would be by the number of *operators*, not the number of
*entries*.
 
 
2)   The ARRL DX contest will always be more of a rich man's
contest that CQWW:  fall is bargain basement off season in the
Caribbean, while February/March is peak big $$$ season.  But for
those who can afford it, I'll be happy to work them and let their
contest club have some points in recognition.
 
3).  What I pay in a year for piano lessons for my two daughters
would pay for a low budget contest trip to the Caribbean. :-(  
DXpeditions are a game for rich guys with families, or for single
guys who aren't necessarily rich but just use their vacation time
and budget for taking radios to warm places.  I've been there,
done that, and maybe by the time cycle 24 gets here, will be able
to do it again.

Sorry Jim, I have to disagree on this point. I'm proof of that to some
extent. All one needs is very good credit and you can go anywhere! HI
