Rotator Repairs

Well yesterday was the first day of Spring here in Tennessee (supposedly) and 
along with the ice/snow/rain/wind that whipped thru the area for the past 2 
days, I couldn't help but notice a strange sound as I watched one of my beams 
windmill around (chink, chink, chink). Brake failure by catastrophic 
destruction? In any case, I've done all of my own rotor repairs  but am 
considering letting a professional do it this time. I know CATS, and Norm's 
and Hygain/Telex do repairs. What advantages does one have over the other?  
Curious about your experiences.  I'm getting to redo some of my CONTEST 
antennas so this is a good time.  BTW, the rotor is an older HAM-M type (but I 
really can't see much difference between it and my HAM IV).

What say, O Great Ones!!!!???

Thanks for reading this.  I am looking for a chance to operate in CQ WW

For what it's worth, I sprayed my aluminum 50 foot tower Flat
Black to blend in with a background of doug fir's...it really
does blend in. I used the cheapest spray paint I could find and
after a year on the Oregon coast it's holding up quite well. I
figure on 'touching' it up on a yearly basis (it's a crank up
tiltover)...

It's amazing to me that everybody's after a ham and his tower
but the next door neighbor has grass growing up his ass, a couple
of old broken down buick's in the drive and 3 junk yard dogs 
running around the place...it's 'ok' to be a pig but not a ham?

I believe there is something else here which seems not to have been 
mentioned yet in this lengthy thread:

A very high percentage of FRC members -- and I'll bet it's likewise 
true of the other contest clubs -- are ALSO members of their local 
clubs. 

I am. I, along with four FRC friends, am a member of the local 
Burlington County (NJ) Radio Club. I know that if I stood up at a BCRC 
meeting and raised this local club/DXPedition issue for discussion, I'd 
get two reactions, namely:

1) Most of the members would have no idea what I was talking about; and

2) One of the other FRC guys would point out to me how inappropriate 
that topic is in that forum. (He'd be absolutely right.)

Is there ever a DXPedition mounted consisting of BCRC members? Yes -- 
annually (VP5T). Who gets the score? FRC. Do the rest of the members of 
BCRC care? No. (Do they enjoy watching the post-trip videotape club 
meeting presentation? Yes.) Does anyone ever file a log crediting BCRC 
as the club? Maybe one or two.

What's the point? The point is that this whole issue is a non-issue, as 
far as the little clubs go.

Now, Field Day? THAT'S another story.

I would like to put in a shameless plug for Norm's Rotor Service in 
Frederick, MD.

He works on all models of CDR/HAM-M/HAM-IV rotors.  His repairs are fast 
and accurate and your rotor will often return looking like it just came 
out of a factory sealed box.  He is a factory authorized repair station 
and has every part ever made for any rotor in this series (no kidding!).

He is good enough that no one around here ever buys a new 
HAM-IV/Tailtwister rotor.  His rebuilt rotors are cheaper and better (he 
has tested them and knows they work).

I hvae no connection with NOrm's Rotor Service although I have know the 
proprietor, Norm Jeweler, for 30 years.  If you ask anyone about me, they 
will tell you that if I thought there was a better place to get my rotors 
fixed I would send it there even if a friend of mine was in that 
business.  I just would not reply to your message.

Send your rotator to Norm.  You won't be sorry.
