New NCJ Editor

Hello all

I am living up to a commitment I made some time ago to "do my part
for the sport of contesting" and take my turn editing the NCJ.

As all other editors have felt, I am somewhat overwhelmed with the
tasks necessary to complete the job, and also feeling somewhat
hard-pressed to meet the same high standards set by Bruce, AA5B, and
his predecessors. Bruce did a great job--TU!

As always and forever, I/we am/are looking for fresh material for
publication. It is not as difficult as you might think to put your
work into the NCJ. I have done it several times in the past. One
just needs the topic and the desire.

I prefer to find material that has not been published
before--especially off the CQ Contest mailing list. Please run your
ideas through me for help if you are interested in doing an article,
or if you have something underway.

If anyone is interested in writing a new column please let me know
also.

The editorship has kind of made its way across the continent. Now it
is in the upper Midwest--an area I am particulary and peculiarly
accustomed to. The Midwest in general is also the place in the world
where the LARGEST amateur radio and contest stations will be found.
I hope to tap the expertise of the people in this region who have
done their time from the "Black Hole."

I also bring other likes and dislikes to the job that may be somewhat
different from past editors. I very much enjoy VHF/UHF contesting
and DXing. I find that few HF contesters have really sampled what is
available "higher up." I hope to expand some of the things we do as
contesters with VHF/UHF contesting. Many typical contesters have
been bitten by the VHF bug lately and are discovering a new frontier
wher every QSO is an achievement on the par of working HS7AS long
path on 40.

The NCJ is and always will be the best contest-specific magazine
available. We will continually try to set it apart from the rest.
If you do not subscribe I ask that you do so. Our niche withing the
amateur community is constantly endangered from one arena to another,
so any support for the sport is ammunition in our favor.

The next sunspot cycle will bring the best EVER contest and general
operating enjoyment. Activity is at an all-time high, technology is
widely and cheaply available the world over, travel is as inexpensive
and safe as it will be for decades to come, and all the contest
records that mean anything will (in my opinion) be set--possibly
forever, in the upcoming years. Be a part of it!

73, Dave Patton, KW9KW

The calls were put by there old call and in that call area. Also you will
notice a number next to the old call. That is the number of the choice
they receieved. The calls are in the order they were receieved by me.

Also Scott, KA9FOX has all the vanity call info on his home page with a
complete listing if anyone is interested.

I am sorry if this format laps some of the email addresses around. They
are just to long to get all on one line. I did put the new email addresses
people gave me on here so if the mail bounces you will know why.

I AM GETTING A LOT OF SCORES WITH NO POWER OR CLASS ON THEM!!!!!!!
THEY ALL GO INTO THE HIGH POWER OR B CLASS !!!!!!!!

This is the first posting and since I got scores off internet and also
off 3830 itself a score may be on here twice. Just let me know if yours
is and I will take the incorrect one off.

Madras is a city in southern India. Go back and read my message
again. The part about AT6A was a small attempt at humor about the FCC
"issuing" someone that call. Obviously my attempt was not 100%
successful. The smiley face :-) included at the end was an attempt to
tip-off the unsuspecting that I was making a small joke.

Actually, if you had submitted an electronic application at 12:59PM on
that Monday you would have gotten any callsign you wanted.

There was nothing random about how these calls were allocated until they
started picking up envelopes from the basket.

I didn't get one of my 25 picks. No reason to be upset at anyone but
myself. If I had it to do over again I would have gotten 25 club calls
and put in 25 applications for the same 25 calls 25 times. That guy in
California with all the club calls was the smartest one. Nobody will
remember who he is/was a year from now.

Subject: QRP-L and the SS
Message-ID: <199611081855.NAA13030 at web.gmpvt.com>

I really enjoy both the contest reflector and the QRP list, and
recently there has been a LOT of mail on the QRP list regarding the SS,
and almost all of it is good.

Many QRP people have never made enough contacts to become particularly
proficient operators, and spend most of their ham time building and
"playing" with little radios, usually mono-band CW rigs. It's a big
world and there's room for everyone, usually around 7.040 MHz.

K5FO (CP-60) challenges the list on a regular basis to get on and operate,
and this year he kind of got everyone going regarding the SS. There was
a fair amount of "I'll make 800 Q's" kind of talk and I think QRP participation
really seems to have been up this year. I sure worked a bunch of them.

After the SS, the mail on the list was really very interesting. The biggest
topic wasn't the weird condx on 40, but the bewildering pace of the CW. Having
to listen to several contacts and get all the info copied before daring to call
was a common report. Even though they only made a handful (e.g. 3 or 4) in
several hours, most of them stuck it out, and could get the whole exchange in
one pass by the end of the contest if it was at "reasonable" speeds, 20 or
25 WPM.

Another major topic was the QRM. You really have to be looking to find a QRP
contest, all down in the noise. Occasionally there's a big, booming 549 or 559
signal that reminds you that your s-meter works, but not often.

There was widespread agreement that contesting really IS fun, even in the big
leagues, and that there isn't any reason to be intimidated. It's a skill, like
serving a tennis ball, and here's your chance to go hit a few with the Pete
Sampras'es of the radio world.

Many people said that they found, with very few exceptions, the ops to be very
patient, friendly and helpful. Congrats to everyone who did their part to make
this contest fun for all the participants. I think a lot of them will be back
next year, or maybe in the NAQP or whatever, with a better antenna and computer
logging and 4.999 watts instead of just 1.5. Some of them might even make your
life easier and run the whole 100 watts, just to see how it feels to be loud.

PS - Now, if I could only get a little louder myself...
