The ARRL TIS "What Rig Should I Buy" answers this question nicely.
Paper copies are available for $2 members, $4 non members, postpaid.
It is also available on the ARRL Web page.
 See http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/bestrig.html. >>

Well, I looked at it and found THAT NO, IT DOESN'T!!!
The title should have been more like: "What criteria to use in selection of
the rig."
As usual, the most important factor contributing to selectivity - skirt
factor and placement of filters in the IF chain is completely ignored (plus
use of cheap diodes for RF switching). (See my previous posting: Radio
Reviews.)

Another questionable article from March 97 issue of QST by N1QQV: What a
Weekend!
He writes about contest operation from the sailboat. What contest? Couldn't
figure out.
Isn't station operating from the boat being on the ocean supposed to sign
/MM? If the station is /MM can it count for land/country operation? Frome the
article I gather that they didn't sign /mm and made lots of people happy by
giving them Rhode Island QSO, while operating from the anchored or sailing
boat, flying a kite antenna.
Did the rules change while I was away? Or is QST promoting and publicizing
"illegal" operations? (Author is a volunteer examiner!) Don Miller had to be
on land in order to count for something, boat wasn't OK.
I'd like to know, maybe in my next contest operation I should fire up 4
Square Boats, or better 6 in-line boats, "rotatable" on the water.

Yea, here I go again, just wanted to know.
