How about scoring the contest twice:

        CQ-WPX CLASSIC  scored in the current manner.

        CQ-WPX 2000 scored in a way that makes for a more level playing field.

- CQ magazine gets more text for the magazine
- Software writers get more money for upgrades
- Operators can debate the pro's and con's of CLASSIC/2000
