there are actually several good reasons for these spots.

1. if you are s&p you know that you need to call cq if you want
to stand a chance at this one.
2. if you have an antenna pointed the wrong way you know to turn
it.
3. if you hear that weak 0xxx you have a clue of who it might
be 
4. it can alert you to unexpected propagation changes
5. you know your competition just worked a rare one which gives
you more incentive

spotting the frequency as the bottom of the band lets those who
see it in the alt-a spot window know it was a 'called me' spot, 
and prevents the bogus packet pileup on your run frequency from
those who don't read the comments.  this saves both the spotter 
and recipients time.
