Another theory:

6 and 7 are right next to each other on the keyboard.  The person hears 72, 
the right index finger is a little to the left of the '7' key, somehow 
getting '6' first then the desired '7'.  Remember, '6' and '7' are entered 
with the same finger if you are a touch typist. Voila, the CK field 
contains what appears to be a valid 2-digit year, and they go on, without 
looking at the screen to confirm the information is entered correctly.
