[CQ-Contest] Why do we put rag chewing on a pedestal?

While Fred may be right to question putting rag chewing on a pedestal I
submit the time is not yet right to offer such stature to contesting and
offer the following as evidence.

While I got very interested in contesting during last fall and spring,
the fact that many DX contest stations with stateside operators/managers
have not responded to qsl requests from both the ARRL International DX
SSB contest and the CQ WPX SSB in March has made me consider whether I
want to continue involvement in contests.

Especially disappointing to me is that some of these operators/managers
are the same people bemoaning the lack of interest in contesting and
urging others to do everything they can to promote contesting. In that
polite e-mails to some of those stations/managers has gone unanswered I
also wonder whether promoting contesting means helping them get a high
score without any return consideration.
