By practicing it during smaller contests.  

You don't teach your kid to drive on a freeway by going out at rush hour.  
You go out when traffic is lighter, tempers are lower, and there is more room 
for "error".

Likewise please don't try SO2R for the first time during CQWW or the like.  A 
good contest for learning SO2R is coming up in 9 days... the North American 
QSO Party (CW, with SSB two weeks later).  Activity is moderate, is spread 
out over multiple bands,  and multipliers by band make an incentive for lots 
of bandswitching, multipler passing, etc.

It's a fun contest.  I should even have my new SO2R box together by then.
