[CQ-Contest] Selective memory

Hi all,

Ever notice how some people read in isolation the sections of the rules they like and seemingly ignore those parts they don't.

I say this given all the people who point out that the S in M/S stands for single, stupid.

But what they forget in arguing against an additional transmitter is that many contests (particularly the one in question) allow an exception for another transmitter working new mults.

You have to know all the rules, both what they say and what they don't say.

In this case, what they don't say is that you're banned from calling CQ on the second radio. All they say is that you must work new mults, which in and of itself does not preclude calling CQ to get those mults, even if logic dictates that the more efficient means is probably S&P. But that logic shouldn't be taken to mean the spirit of the rules is to ban CQs. The rules also don't mandate that you return every answer to every CQ, which is the second station's out in this regard. The rules also don't state that the main station must cease transmitting when the mult station is working new mults.

If you want, for your own enjoyment, to limit yourself to a selective reading of the rules, all the power to you. Just don't be surprised if others play by the entirety of the rules.
