When you're retired, days and dates don't mean much. Every day is labor
day, any two days can be the weekend.
Looking forward to my favorite contest, the NA Sprint, I grabbed the
nearest contest rag...it happened to be CQ CONTEST...and peeled the
address label off the cover because it was on top of the date for the CW
Sprint. What a lousy time to run the contest...Labor Day weekend...but I
guessed it was always the first full weekend and this was it.
A few days later while looking thru Sept CQ, I noticed the Labor Day
weekend Sprint date again , so I decided to leave the Cape and head home
Fri nite to Ct. I would do the Sprint Sat nite, and return to Cape Cod
Sunday morning. 20M was good on the way home, and I had company all the
way on 20 CW. Around Norwich, with half an hour to go, I worked Jim,
N3BB and told him Im gg home for the CW Sprint this weekend. Jim was
glad I straightened him out, because his Sprint Team was planning on the
next weekend, but I told him that both CQ magazine and CQ Contest listed
it as this weekend! While we were in QSO, Jim looked at the WA7BNM
listing of contest dates, and that had it as the next weekend. When I
arrived at home, I looked at QST and that had it as next weekend. I read
K1KI's message again and that had it as next weekend also!
It's Saturday night now, and I'm back on the Cape. I drove about 370
miles because of wrong dates for a contest! MAYBE Ill do it again next
weekend...
I guess the moral of the story is go with the date the sponsor
publishes, and hope it's right! JACK
