I don'k now what's the situation in NA, but here in Europe after the first
hours there is plenty of space for a clean spot during a CQ160m SSB (and
CW). Another time period arrangement for this contest that would enhances
rates and discourages calling in dead periods, it would surely help the
situation in this contest and many others making the events even more
interesting than they are.
The realism with the fact that 1830-1850 is probably the area that's shared
with more countries around the world, and not that someone has 2 MHz
available, could be the most interesting issue to take into consideration
when arranging something that's thought to work, at least if a contest
pretends to be an international one.
Last but not least I've seen the whole 160m band much more crowded in
WWDXSSB than for what it it happens in CQ160 likewise the fact that the band
is practically unavailable for SSB during the CW events for who has a
limited range.
When *QRM* is heavy, as well as I don't see why to use SSB when the band is
filled with CW, the same consideration could be valid in the opposite sense
and noone dies if this is for a few hours.
I'm envy envy at 2MHz band *owners*, but I will never call out of my allowed
*giant* band (20 KHz) although I often worked USA split beeing anyway jammed
at my RX 1870/1920 by some CW'r that felt his mission to patrol a bandplan
that practically doesn't exist in any 160m contest (independently by mode)
and hasn't a great meaning in the few weekends where an SSB or a CW contest
takes place.
Just my two cents (Euro cents, of course).
