[CQ-Contest] 30m contest - probably a spur

I've since heard 2 other stateside stations on 30m. A few times
I've heard both sides of the qso. All signals are very weak...
certainly weaker than expected for 30m, given the station locations
and time of day (night). So I suspect they are indeed just spurs,
as several have pointed out. How they are landing in 30m is beyond
me.

Thanks to all,
Rich, KA8OKH

Rich,

You might be hearing signals from the CQ WW 160 contest. It will be running
again tonight, so you might want to try the following experiment. If you hear
one of the phantom signals on 30 meters, jot down the exact frequency and
callsign of the station. Then switch to 160 meters, and listen for that
same station.
If you hear them, jot down the exact frequency. If you do this for several
stations,
you stand a better chance of discerning the nature of the spurious. If for
example
there is a difference in spacing between the fundamental signals on 160 and
the
spurious signals on 30 meters, then that indicates that a harmonic of the
fundamental
signals is involved (e.g. stations whose fundamental carriers are 10 KHz
apart on
160 and whose spurious signals are 20 KHz apart on 30 meters indicates a
second
harmonic is involved in the spurious generation). Perhaps you can post your
findings
to the reflector and some of the RF savvy folks on here can figure out
where the
problem is coming from.

What kind of receiver are you using? If you have more than one receiver
that covers
30 meters, try them both to see if spurious is present on both or just one.
