Why not just have a class "X" - experimental?

Anything goes as long as it is within the governing regulations for amateur radio in the country where each transmitter is
located.

The whole point is to allow people to experiment with new ideas and forms of contesting. There might be no awards in this
category, since entries would not be very comparable. But the log submission would have an additional requirement to explain how
the contest was operated and how the station was constructed or implemented. The contest sponsors can then include some of the most
interesting ideas in the results.

For example, someone might have a complete robot station on CW in this category. Others might experiment with remote receiver
sites tied back via the internet. And so on.

Many other competitive sports with a strong technology component have certain "open" or "development" categories with more
flexible rules to allow new ideas to be prototyped and improved.
