All of you seem to be forgetting one thing. Most authors for QST,
i.e., the ARRL, are volunteers. No pay.
[note from list manager - ARRL does pay for QST articles]
If you are part of the 75% that do not belong, you get what you paid for.
It is sort of like bitching about the government you "didn't take time to
vote for or against."
As for the this:

We would not know. They just may be too cheap to put in their 5 cents
worth to vote.
I believe the ARRL publishes the best they have, i.e., submitted by
volunteers.
If you have a better idea, put it to pen and submit it.
