   Thanks for bringing up the topic in such a graceful manner.  As you pointed out, if every contest's sponsor sent out frequent
promotional emails, the volume of traffic would be burdensome.

   My suggestion for a policy is:
-- one notice about a month before the event (to help with planning one's calendar, negotiating family commitments, etc).
-- another 5-10 days before the event.
-- one reminder a few days before the log submission deadline.
-- one announcement when the results are available on the web.

   This would seem adequate without being too overwhelming.
