There are lots of other reasons as well.  As is often the case on the low
bands,
at the sunset opening to Europe, even though Eur signals are loud, they
cannot seem to hear us very well.  Actually, I believe that our atmospheric
noise
level is much lower at that time than theirs in the middle of the night.
U.S.
west coast/east coast contacts experience similar effects.  Different levels
of
Ionisperic absorbtion may also be a contributor.
