Doug,

How do you know who you worked when the station hasn't ID'd for 5 minutes?

There are many answers. But the simplest one of all is...

You've been trying to work him for 10 minutes!

Yes, I know, it's not the most efficient use of time. But consider this:
a) Some ops are looking for new band/mode DXCC entities; they're in it for
fun and to give out Q's, not for the competition per se. So, if they need
B1GUN (you know, that Big Gun DX'er who can't be bothered to ID too often
because s/he feels it's inefficient) or whomever on that band, then they
will often take as much time as they need to work him/her/it.

b) Those with a dual VFO, or memory, or running SO2R, will often try to
crack the pileup, fail after a few tries, but punch the frequency into
whatever and check back periodically. I do this all the time. So if I'm
trying to work B1GUN but can't get through right away, maybe an antenna or
propagation shift a little while later will favor me. Unless there's an
operator change (ie a change in voice), this usually works. Keep in mind
that quite a few of the B1GUN category M/M stations often tend to park on a
frequency for hours at a time, so this works in our favor too.

Over the years (decades) I've found that "just tune on by" works for me. If
they don't sign in 2 calls...I'm gone.

What happens if you call a "non-signer" and work him and he still does not
sign his call? What do you log? Now you are LOCKED to that frequency until
he signs. Yuck.

One thing I have never been able to figure out is this scenario:

Despite my "rule" to tune past anyone not signing after 2 exchanges,
sometimes I am fascinated to sit and listen...especially if it is good zone.
I have listened for many minutes (once, even 5 minutes) and noted that the
guy just NEVER SIGNS his call. Despite that, I notice "new" callers to the
pileup...they show up out of the blue, call, work the guy, and qsy, never
having heard his callsign (cuz he never signed it). It's also funny how the
callers often are all from the same USA call area....all W1's or all W3's
etc. Gee...I wonder what they logged? Gee, I wonder how they knew what to
log?

(tee hee)
