Indeed. And what about the alternative? It was virtually impossible to
establish a listening frequency above 7.050 (or 7.040 for that matter.) This
was, of course, due to the huge number of EU stations crammed into that
narrow 50 KHz segment from 7.050-7.100. As others have pointed out, there
were often two, three, four or more stations calling on the same frequency!
Now, had we tried to squeeze our listening frequency into that segment,
wouldn't we have been inviting deliberate QRM to those stations? Is it worse
to invite someone to transmit on an unused frequency in the EU CW segment or
to invite someone to QRM contest stations in the EU phone segment? Pick your
poison!

As Jim said at the start of this thread, we're going to have this problem
until the 40m allocation mess is straightened out.
