The Svetlana 4CX800A is the most cost-effective
full-power amplifier solution around, with a new
tested pair available for under $140 and capable
of 1500W output all day 160 - 10. There seem
to be enough of them to keep us all running for
the foreseeable future.

OTOH, the coming of free markets means that
Svetlana has had opportunities to screw up as
well, and they've taken advantage of it. The
4CX1600B was produced specifically for the
Amateur market, and Ten Tec, Emtron, QRO Technologies,
and Alpha/Power designed amps around them. There
was an amp project in the ARRL Handbook. And then
Svetlana stopped making and shipping these tubes!
There is no "second source" producer, and although
Svetlana says they'll be making more "Real Soon Now",
it hasn't happened. I, of one, am not holding my
breath.

The Svetlana GU-91b is a "sort of acceptable"
replacement for the 4CX1600B, requiring a bit more
cooling air and a different sized chimney. Unfortunately,
it's hard to find one of these, too!
