Sorry, but this is long, and parts of it are really ugly... and
unfortunately one of my sources of trace data is not available so its
not as good as I would like. And apparently some self spotters figured
out the data wasn't available and took advantage of it... So there were
lots more suspicious spots than there have been since dxsummit started
publishing ip addresses and I started doing these reports. Don't throw
this one away without at least getting through it once, there are some
questions at the end that I can't explain that maybe someone out there
will recognize.
First some statistics from my node:
Total spots: 42049

>From here on it gets muddier. DXSummit no longer is providing ip
address data so it appears that the abusers have gone back to work
spotting themselves like crazy. This report is long and unfortunately
less definitive than many past reports due to the lack of ip data....
lots of numbers, and lots of interesting spot patterns follow. All the
node k1ttt-14 listed sources come from the #cqdx irc channel which gets
fed from dxsummit, most of those spots were put in from dxsummit as far
as I can tell from a spot check, but some may have been sucked from
other nodes.
Some statistics on single spotter spots... these are counts of spots
from spotters who only made one spot in the whole contest for the listed
dx station. It is most common for very rare dx stations to get spots
like this from dxers who were looking for a new one and not into the
contest. It is fairly odd for 'common' stations to get many of them.
First, what I see as 'normal' statistics. These are the biggest spot
getters from the weekend showing how many single spotter spots they get:
DX Total All Singles DXSummit only
--------- ----- ----------- -------------
HC8L 464 22 4% 10 2%
FP/VE7SV 457 23 5% 5 1%
EA8ZS 377 8 2% 1 0%
VP2E 369 8 2% 3 0%
V26B 338 6 1% 3 0%
KH7X 326 13 3% 4 1%
XX9C 322 26 8% 10 3%
PJ2T 305 7 2% 4 1%
MD4K 242 5 2% 1 0%
WP2Z 218 7 3% 1 0%
Note that the rarest of them is probably xx9c and they got only 8% from
single spotters from all spot sources and 3% from dxsummit single
spotters.
Now, change the sort order to sort by the count of single spotter spots:
DX Total All Singles DXSummit only
--------- ----- ----------- -------------
EA3NW 31 17 54 16 51
JU1DX 71 16 22 15 21
A52CDX 51 11 21 2 3
ST2T 101 11 10 3 2
VK4WWI/8 32 10 31 3 9
CE4PBB 81 10 12 9 11
Now some odd calls stand out. Note I have removed the ones that were on
the top spot getter list above.
Lets look at the stations above who just happen to also show up in some
other data as looking odd:

Interesting... exact same integer frequencies from many stations, very
similar comments from several of the stations. unfortunately many of
these calls actually exist... it is kind of interesting that a jt
spotting ju1dx would comment about a 'big ja wall'. And why would so
many different stations make comments including 'cq ww'. unfortunately
without dxsummit ip address data I can't chase these any further.

While all 3 LA calls are issued, that's one hell of a coincidence!
This next group totally amazes me... I don't think I have ever seen this
many undisguised self spots in a contest. It almost makes me think
there is a buggy piece of software out there sending out unintentional
spots. All of these spots were apparently put in by the dx station
themselves... note that very few of them are from the k1ttt-14 irc
source so they are mostly from real nodes. Usually this report results
in a couple dozen vhf self spots (I removed them from this list), and a
dozen or so harrasment spots (also already removed below), and some
testing spots (I removed a few of those also), and then a few european
net spots from the net controls are left... but this is totally strange
to have so many left over after removing those obvious ones:

For the ones above that were from my node:
Sn5z was from a polish isp, and was on much of the weekend on my node.
Ve9glf was from a new brunswick isp but was only on for a few minutes
during the contest.
Vk4wpx was only on for a short time but was from an australian isp.
Some of the comments seem to include another callsign, maybe there is a
software glitch somewhere that is messing up who is spotting with who is
being spotted?? Anyone see a pattern above or know what might have been
happening??
