Even though Jim needs no help from me I totally second and am in total agreement. N6RCE said:""International DX Convention in Visalia - totally politics!"". I would like to know what he is referring to. I am unable to attend functions any longer but have chatted with many guys on the air since Visalia and no one, not one guy, has had anything bad to say. I chatted briefly with Don, VK3DZ(ed)M,(now SK), and have heard Martti, and others, on the air. These guys are/were prominent DX'ers who traveled 1/2 way around the world to attend Visalia. I heard no complaints, only compliments.
If you are looking for good socializing, really good BS'ing, 807's, and thrown in for good measure some ham-radio activities then Visalia is for you.
If you are looking for the skies to open and give you some sort-of Imperial revelation then Visalia, Dayton, or any gathering of hams probably will never satisfy you. Visalia and Dayton provide everything for a really good weekend of ham-radio fun. You have 2 choices: You can make the best of it and have a really good weekend or you can 'knit-pick' and have a lousy weekend.
I prefer to make the best of it, and have in the past.

Having frequented Visalia, which we used to know as Fresno, 37 of the years
since 1965, I have NO CLUE as to what N6RCE is complaining about.
Visalia is/was formally the annual joint meeting of the Northern and
Southern California DX clubs. Forty years ago, 90% of the attendees were in
those clubs, and a real happy time had by all.
Then it became known as the International DX Convention, and many visitors
started coming from virtually all continents and ham radio persuasions.
And contestors were made to feel welcome, and Visalia now hosts a Friday
night contesting banquet, a Saturday afternoon contest forum, contest beer
suites, etc.
And a nice compact room, in the main convention hotel, for exhibitors.
One can do Visalia, and never leave the hotel. But if they choose to drive
5 miles to central Visalia, they will find a very nice city, good
restaurants, and feel "safe".
The Visalia convention this year, and increasingly so, was populated by many
from outside of California, and obviously it has become a favorite place to
go in April.
Many of the top DXers and contesters from world-wide show at Visalia every
year. I had the privilege of first meeting KH6IJ, K3ZO, W6AM, W6RR (and
many other Southern California DXers/Contesters), OH1RY, and OH2BH, at
"Fresno".
Again, I have NO CLUE as to what N6RCE is talking about, but probably he has
already volunteered to make 2006 Visalia even better.
