European Sprint Contest - Spring SSB - April 9, 2005
-----------------------------------------------------
The story of the 2005 Spring phone Sprint is that after
getting close several times, Tonno ES5TV cracked the
300-QSO barrier with a new record score of 304.
Congratulations! This achievement caused a failure in our
checking software which had only been designed for a maximum
of 300 Qs per entrant, but that problem was quickly fixed.
Tonno had a very high QSO total on 20m and was able to use
his 2-radio setup very effectively to keep a presence on the
band after others had QSYed. Out of 315 raw QSOs, Tonno
changed band more than 90 times - that's good two-radio
operation!
Other entrants have also learned that it pays to make a
few visits back to the band after most people have moved
to 40m. If you'd like to listen to some audio for the
contest, including Tonno using two radios, go to
<http://www.rk3awl.ru/sounds/euspsph05.php> which has audio
clips captured by Dmitri, RW3FO.
The other story this time around is the record number of
entries, which surely helped Tonno to his record score.
140 logs were received for this contest, and only four of
them were on paper. Most logs were in Cabrillo format and
this really helps the checking process to go smoothly.
If you are running 100w or less please make sure the word
LOW appears in the CATEGORY: line of your Cabrillo header,
otherwise we are not able to mark your log as low power in
the results. Just like in this Spring's CW contest, there
was hot competition in the low power category but it's no
real surprise that the gap in scores between the high and
low-power entrants is bigger on phone compared with CW.
In second place is another past winner Ben, DL6RAI with
247 points and then comes Jussi-Pekka OH6RX leading a pack
of five stations separated by just seven points. The top
low power scores are also very close together, and Vlad
UA4LU is the winner in this category with 130 points,
followed closely by Franki ON5ZO and Valery RW3AI.
I was active for the first half of the contest and I
noticed a lot of occasions where entrants were not obeying
the rule which says that BOTH callsigns must be sent by
each person during the exchange. This is necessary because
one station is going to QSY and so there will not be another
chance to copy the call. It is in your interest to send your
own callsign once for each QSO, otherwise you will lose QSO
points if the other station gets your call wrong.
Thanks to all Eu Sprinters for a record entry in the phone
Sprint, and please check the new web site <www.eusprint.com>
for full results, log files and UBNs.
