Perhaps the lack of female contesters related somewhat to genetics.  Men have 
a higher level of testosterone, making them more combative and competitive, 
and isn't that what contesting is....a civilized (more or less) combat on the 
airwaves?

That's not to say it's all about genetics.  I remember lots of YLs in the 60s 
operating from the OK, LZ, USSR with the OK1K or LZ1K or UA6K club calls.  
Perhaps it depends a little on the society the ham is operating in.
