     The insulators shown are for high-voltage insulator strings used in the
electric utility industry.  The ball at the bottom of one insulator slips
into the clevis joint at the top of the next one in line and so on until the
proper withstand voltage rating for the string is reached.  The cotter pin
shown in http://www.k1ttt.net/images/insulator2.jpg keeps each lower
insulator skirt in place.

     The floppiness of the resulting insulator strings is irrelevant when
they are actually hanging off high-voltage towers and supporting the heavy
conductors.  Hence the need for ratings of 20,000 to 40,000 pounds of
tension as marked on some of the specimens.  (High-tension is to be taken
literally: 20,000 to 40,000+ pounds of tension per conductor is typical for
the hundred kV levels and up.)
