[CQ-Contest] 1 x 2 callsigns

The key to callsigns, IMHO, is to pick one with good phonetics and good CW
duration, and then, most important -- USE IT A LOT! If you use it a lot,
that will become more important than the actual call itself.
The only thing special about the call W3LPL -- other than the exceptional
ops and station behind it -- is that it's on the air almost every contest.
As callsigns go, there's nothing extraordinary about it. It's not great on
CW and the phonetics aren't exactly strong, either. But everybody knows who
it is when someone there is calling.
If you're in an area where by default you'll become well known (VO1 in SS,
ZD8 in WW), you'll become well known even if you cherry pick when and where
you operate. But if you're in the midst of 10s of 1,000s of other
contesters, the only way to stand out is to be there a lot. Of course, the
fringe benefit to that is that you get lots of practice, too.
