[CQ-Contest] Callsign databases in the mirror

This is certainly an issue that is likely to create much discussion.  

My thoughts:

1. There is no doubt that using a callsign database can make it easier to get
pull a callsign out of a pileup or noise.  

2. It can be used in such a way to improve your accuracy.  If a call you are
working isn't in the database, you might take extra time to make sure you 
have it right.

3. It can also be used in such as way as to hamper your accuracy - if you 
believe what is there without being sure.  You might think you have the call
right without taking some extra time to be sure.

4. I know of some contesters who wouldn't mind seeing the genie put back 
into the bottle.  

5. I am sure there are other contesters who see this as a valid tool and
don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to use it.  

Back in the good old days of contesting, being able to pick out partial
callsigns and know who it was calling was an advantage the better ops 
had over the lesser ones.  It also rewarded those who were active on 
the bands and knew who was likely to be calling.  These are probably good
things if your intent is to measure operator performance.

On the other hand, I think it is fair to say this is a tool that is used 
pretty much by everyone.  It is unlikely that one could convince the 
majority of contest operators that this is something that should put 
you in the assisted category.  

I just hope there is enough "noise" in the database - or just so many 
dawg gone callsigns, that people who are not careful about how they 
use it get sucked into getting more calls wrong than right because of it.

BTW - I have chosen to "opt out" of having my callsign included in the 
databases that K5ZD generates.  I am probably the only guy who has 
requested this, but it is a possibility if you are interested.
