[CQ-Contest] Little old ladies changing tires

Ev,
A couple of points. We're discussing what it means to be a Single Op
Assisted or Unlimited entrant. The sponsors clearly define what it is. The
questions about other things not included in the sponsor's definitions are
all red herrings.
Prior to the advent of packet, there was no assisted category, and the
things some are now claiming should kick you into the assisted category took
place routinely as an old single op entrant and they still should.
Assisted was created to allow single ops to use packet.
Is that clear enough? It is not undefined.
It also created a valid category for those who used FM voice spotting
networks. There's some sordid history there too, but that's another
discussion.
Regardless, someone randomly telling you some mult is up 5 is not equivalent
to using packet (or the various internet age descriptions of the same thing)
or an FM voice spotting network, or a self-styled "fan club".
Now, we have some "new kids on the block" who are equating "random acts of
kindness" with using packet or an FM voice spotting network.
Sorry. They are not the same thing.
73,
Bob W5OV

The issue here is not receiving some information and doing something with
it; it is *how* you came to receive the information.
---------------------------
Interestingly, I believe that the issue is that the term "assistance" is
undefined, therefore it can be anything that the operator believes that it
is, in good conscience.
On-list discussions like this help to form opinions (you just opened my eyes
to another way of looking at it -- that I'm seriously pondering as my
opinion forms)...yet, until a sponsor comes forward and offers a definition,
it is simply discussion without possible resolution.
