Hi Craig,

If you want to join that  "group of contesters that seem to know each other
and communicate and share stations and help each other" all you need to do
is ask if a station is available or if a superstation Multi-op needs another
operator. They might say no. I'd best most of the time they would say yes.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. K1TTT regularly posts on this reflector
that his superstation is available. All you need to do is express your
interest.

Yes, hardware makes a difference. The best operators in the world with
literally a wire hanging out the window probably couldn't beat an average
operator at a nearby superstation. But I bet most of those ops would take my
station and up the score I would have achieved by 20%.
