[CQ-Contest] Icom 746 as contesting rig

Yaesu front panel headphone jacks are useless.
Plug your headphones into the external speaker jack on the back panel of the
radio through an adapter you can rig up easily.
If you have the Yaesu external speaker, plug your headphones into the
headphone jack on it (it's fed from the external speaker jack) instead of
directly into the radio.
The levels, specifically for Heil ProSets, are much more tolerable. My
Kenwood HC-5's work great that way too.

Chuck,
Well, I guess that's why there are Kenwoods, Yaesus, Icoms, TenTecs, Hondas,
Fords, Chevys and Toyotas.
Everyone hears and processes audio differently.
I must add here that I prefer the AUDIO HEADPHONE AMP in the 746, although
there is some noise there. The 1000's headphone amp does not drive my Heil
Proset to my liking. Professionally I am broadcaster and when I'm on the "3
meter" band I like those cans LOUD. Actually, I'm considering adding an
outboard headphone amp for my shack and driving it from the SO2R box.
This, however, has nothing to do with the front end/IF performance of said
radios.
I think it would be very interesting to compare these (and other) radios
side by side at the same site under real time contest conditions...but that
would mean missing lots of Qs!
Different strokes for different folks.

IC746 receiver doesn't handle contest band conditions and IM very well
Wow...I just sold my FT-1000MP MKV Field, with the INRAD roofing filter
because, to my ears, the 746 handled contest condx, and IM better! I've
used the 746 to make around 50K contest QSO's since 2000, and used the MKV
for about 5K contest Q's....really do prefer the 746. But, I never have
been a great fan of Yaesu's...owned a 1000D and MKV, sold both.
