I thought VHF was for 2 things:
 
1)  An elmer of mine once said "VHF is for cooking chicken and beans".   I guess he was right because there are actually people to talk to on HF.
 
2)  A VHF handheld really comes in handy when you are on a tower and have to talk to the ground crew.
