Hi Bob,

 

I would speculate partially it is due to the club system. The Russians
in particular have used clubs very effectively. Not sure about Brazil,
although I would also speculate that the hobby leads to employment (or
advancement) in both countries.

 

The other possibility is that there are less distractions for the youth
in those countries. I was rather surprised by the UK number, or do the
young hams there just not operate contests?
