To the contesting community, at large (i.e., no one person specific)...
I'm going step up to the pulpit and give you my opinion regarding this situation (whether you want to hear it or not!).
First, I don't know who solicited the initial query message. I don't care and it doesn't matter.
Second, MY first reaction to reading it was "Here's an educational opportunity!"
Third, and unfortunately, I was amazed the ensuing thread hopped onto the "cheater" bandwagon so quickly.
Without knowing the qualifications / skill of the originator, I would have replied to the reqeust in an educational tone. Something along the lines that providing confirmations or feedback outside of the contest period is not within the spirit of the competition. Then I would give a choice, "If I provide the information you seek, your log submission will become a checklog." "If you submit your log 'as is' it will ensure a valid contest entry." "What would you like to do?"
Maybe the person asking for confirmation is a newbie. Maybe they are a seasoned 'professional'. It doesn't matter. Acknowledging the message and suggesting the consequences in a positive tone would deliver the 'correct' answer to either participant. I am unsure whether I would cc: the contest sponsor on my initial email response.
In any case, I see the contest sponsor has responded and it's a non-issue now. But I couldn't help but shake my head after I began reading the answers to the original question posted by Barry - W2UP.

Hi Everybody.
We have been in contact with the person sending the log check email this morning.
He has sent in an unedited log 2 minutes after receiving my email and apologized for his emails sent.
No real contester would have given him a proper response anyway!
I think the case can be closed.
Kind regards
