[CQ-Contest] Filter???????

I vaguely recall reading about some psycho-acoustic effects involving
listening to sources that are not straight ahead (i.e., equal to both
ears). The brain exercises some biological form of signal correlation
that takes advantage of phase and power differences when a source is
somewhat off to the side... helping one pick out the interesting
information from the background. This is a partial explanation of the
"cocktail party effect", in which one listens in on a distant
conversation of interest despite many other things happening in the
immediate vicinity. For some reason this is harder to do if the source
is straight ahead.
Maybe someone with access to the audiology research world can fill in
more details.

This morning I was copying OH6AH on 40M LP but he was pretty weak and the background noise made it a little difficult. The speaker was on and I needed to go downstairs to get something - as I descended the stairs it seemed like a filter was switched in by my brain and all the background noise went away leaving only the signal. Just like a nifty audio filter. In years gone by I have noticed this many times but never asked anyone about the phenomenon. In Arizona I would be working in the yard maybe 100' away from the shack, the window would be open and radio on and I could copy weak signals without any problem.
