Getting started in Mobile contesting

Mobile contesting is growing in popularity, both for VHF contests and QSO 
parties.  What is the best way to get started in mobile contesting? What 
equipment and antennas are best? How do you plan your routes to maximize 
your score?  Which contests do you think are best for mobile operating?
