We spot rivals for the same reason we contact each other - radiosport is a 
sport of cooperation.  In fact, it is just about the only sport I can think 
of that consists of competitive cooperation - it is unique.  The winners are 
those that cooperate most effectively and with the most competitors. 
Cooperation is the underlying theme, so it is hardly surprising that it 
extends to spotting other opportunities to cooperate.
