By coincidence I was just reviewing my log for the same matter seen from my 
side.
Last year I worked 7 stations from z3 on 40m, at utc times (all on 
Saturday):
14.51  (W7)
14.58  (W6)
15.07  (W7)
15.09 (W6)
15.11 (W7)
15.25  (W6)
01.20 (W6)

I don't know the QTH so I included the call district. You can access all the 
logs on the CW WW website.

I was running mostly EU and some UA9. Obviously 'long path' (I was working 
NA on 15m with the 2nd radio). My antenna was a 10m long vertical wire on a 
fiber glass pole, 2 elevated radials 2m high suspended in the hedge.
Come to think of it, my fiber pole broke the week before and I had to remove 
the lower section. As a result the wire was too long, I coiled it up by 
winding it round the pole in he middle. Running approx. 900W.
This shows that you don't need a yagi for z3-z14 contacts on 40m. But I'm 
sure it helps: I checked 3 Belgian logs with 2 or more elements on 40m and 
they worked z3 at the same times yet they worked a few more.
